MANILA, Philippines -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Thursday expressed its gratitude to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for its help in the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The PSC had offered its facilities as quarantine centers to house COVID-19 patients.

"We at DPWH have recognized your unwavering support for the conversion of the Ninoy Aquino Stadium and the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex facility as a designated quarantine facility for COVID-19 patients," said DPWH Undersecretary for UPMO Operations and Technical Services Emil Sadain in the department's letter to the PSC.

In the letter addressed to PSC chairman William Ramirez, Sadain lauded the sports agency's prompt response to the inadequacy of health facilities due to the influx of COVID-19 patients.

The DPWH official, who also heads the Task Force on Augmentation of National and Local Healthcare Facilities, praised the cooperation of the public and private sector.

"The combined efforts of public and private entities have helped in the swift implementation of the national and local healthcare facilities as one of your urgent measures in addressing the current health crisis," said Sadain.

In response, PSC officer-in-charge Ramon Fernandez assured the DPWH that the sports agency continues to support the fight against the pandemic in the midst of the global health crisis.

"We thank DPWH for trusting us and working with us. Rest assured that the PSC will always be supporting this fight against COVID-19 in ways we can," said Fernandez, who serves as the agency's OIC on behalf of Ramirez.

The PSC had turned over three major facilities -- the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, and the Multi-Purpose Arena in the PhilSports Complex -- which were converted into "We Heal As One" centers.
