MANILA, Philippines – Filipino champ Manny Pacquiao promised to return to the boxing ring next year as his right shoulder steadily improves.
The eight division former world champion, who is currently in Indonesia, promised his fans that he will be ready in 2016.
“I'm ready to fight, next year,” he was quoted as saying by Boxing Scene.
Pacquiao said his rotator cuff that he re-injured during the Floyd Mayweather fight is healing nicely as expected. “I'm fine. I can lift it,” the boxing superstar said.
Pacquiao underwent surgery on his right shoulder a few days after the Mayweather fight. He is scheduled to return to the United States for a follow-up with Dr. Neal El Attrache.
His boxing coach Freddie Roach said they are looking at pitting Pacquiao against a formidable opponent once he returns to the ring in 2016.
"I think that's what we're looking for, (to beat someone conclusively), so it's going to have to be a tough opponent," said Roach.
Roach did not name any potential opponent, but Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum has named Lucas Matthysse, Kell Brook, and Terence Crawford as potential opponents for Pacquiao.
