Former Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino will abide by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) directive, and inhibit himself from a special meeting set Monday, July 8.

The IOC issued the order in a letter addressed to the POC on Friday.

The international body instructed all eligible members of the executive board to attend the said meeting, except those who resigned from their positions such as Tolentino, former POC president Ricky Vargas, and former board members Clint Aranas and Cynthia Carrion.

This was meant “to avoid further disputes or challenges, and in the interest of the POC as an institution.”

“As I said in the press conference (Thursday), I would like the problems in the POC to be solved as soon as possible,” said Tolentino in a statement.

“As such, I will stand by my word that I will abide by the advisories from the gentlemen from the IOC and OCA who have been keenly following the developments here to help us find a solution.”

Tolentino on Thursday announced his intention to run for POC president in the July 28 election.

“Since I have also announced my intention to stand for the position of President in the coming POC election, I think it's best that I inhibit myself from the said meeting,” Tolentino said. “Taking off from that, I am formally making known that I will not attend the board meeting on July 8, 2019, as advised by IOC-(Olympic Council of Asia).”

In a letter addressed to the POC on Wednesday, the IOC recommended a set of dates and steps to follow leading to the POC special election.

The world Olympic governing body suggested that a special board meeting be held not later than Monday, an extraordinary general assembly not later than July 18 and an election not later than July 28 with the presence of an IOC/OCA representative.
