MANILA, Philippines – BanKo-Perlas sustained its impressive form to overcome PayMaya in four sets and draw first blood in their best-of-3 semifinals series in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference on Sunday.
Imports Jutarat Montripila and Lakia Bright came through with superb performances for the Perlas Spikers as they hacked out a 25-19, 26-28, 25-23, 25-23 triumph over the High Flyers at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Jutarat was unstoppable for BanKo-Perlas, as she unleashed 31 points on 30 kills. Bright added 23 points, 21 off spikes, to power the third-seeded Spikers over the second-seeded High Flyers.
“Sabi ko lang sa kanila, kailangan mag-trabaho,” said BanKo-Perlas coach Dong dela Cruz. “We have to earn every point, kasi alam naman natin na malakas ang PayMaya.”
“So I commend my players, kasi ‘yung puso nila na manalo, andoon. Nilabas nila ang galling nila,” he added.
BanKo-Perlas’ triumph capped a day of upsets in the PVL semifinals, after No. 4 Pocari Sweat stunned the top-seeded Creamline Cool Smashers earlier in the day.
The Perlas Spikers have now won eight consecutive matches dating back to the tail-end of the elimination round and counting its sweep of the quarterfinals.
Tess Rountree scored 31 points and Grethcel Soltones had 16 for the High Flyers.
Like Pocari Sweat, BanKo-Perlas will gun for a spot in the Finals on Wednesday at the same San Juan venue.
