MANILA, Philippines – Former Ateneo Lady Eagle Gretchen Ho teams up with veteran sportscaster and choreographer Mia Cabalfin in “Gameday Weekend,” a lifestyle-oriented sports show that will air on Balls Channel and Studio 23 beginning June 29.

“Gameday Weekend” is a spin-off of the weekday “Gameday with Boom” show that delivers sports news.

“Gameday Weekend” is built for the weekend warriors and will feature segments on the latest sports gear, fitness routines, sports events as well as interviews with prominent athletes and sports experts.

The 30-minute show will feature Ho and Cabalfin, as well as surprise co-hosts from the Philippine Azkals, learn a new sport every weekend, from surfing to water polo to bowling.

“You see us in an environment that we’re not used to,” said Ho. “Like me, you see me surfing and playing water polo. Si Mia naman, you see her play billiards and bowling.”

Cabalfin said the show will “bring the audience deeper into the sporting world.”

“Not too many people get the chance to really go in-depth into the sport, like preparing for the sport, the workouts, the fitness routine, the sports gear,” she said.

“It’s not just for those who are very sporty, but also for those who are new to the sporting world and may want to try something new,” she added.

Each week, a few players from the Philippine Azkals will join Ho and Cabalfin in learning a new sport. The Sunday edition of “Gameday Weekend” will feature a showdown between the girls and the footballers.

Ebong Joson of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) said the Azkals management welcomed the opportunity to showcase the members of the national football team through “Gameday Weekend.”

“They have a lot of fans who ask about them and want to get to know them better, and this is the best way for us to bring them out in a way that doesn’t compromise their playing and their schedule,” he explained.

“It’s the perfect venue for them, and they have responded very, very positively. They enjoy it, because they’re kids, and they like hamming it up on TV, in front of the camera,” Joson added.

Some of the Azkals who have already participated in the show are Misagh Bahadoran, Jeffrey Christiaens, Paolo Pascual, and twins Marvin and Marwin Angeles.

“The first sport I tried was surfing,” Bahadoran said. “It was a very good experience. It was my first time surfing and I thought that it was kind of easy, because we are athletic.”

“But it wasn’t. It was all about balance, and I slipped many times but I enjoyed it so much,” he added.

“Gameday Weekend” airs at 5:30 pm on Saturday and Sundays on Balls Channel and at 9:30 pm on Studio 23.
