MANILA, Philippines – The 89th season of the NCAA kicks off on Saturday, June 22 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, with host school College of St. Benilde (CSB) promising to put on a memorable opening ceremony.

“We are going to make the opening ceremonies among the best so far,” CSB President Br. Dennis Magbanua, FSC said during a press conference Tuesday.

“We cannot share too much of our secrets, because then it won’t be that fun anymore,” he added. “But the involvement of all the schools will be there, and it’s very visual, and physical in a way.”

“To describe it right now would be unfair because it is much, much better when you see it.”

The season’s theme, “Our stars will shine in 89,” aims to redefine what it means to be a star.

“This year’s theme changes the notion of being a star – from just being a superior athlete to a person who is grounded with integrity, honor and humility. We shift the focus from being one star in the dark to a star that enables others to shine,” Magbanua said in a statement.

Magbanua hopes the sports events in the NCAA will help in creating more stars as well.

“Hopefully, all the NCAA players can become stars, so they can be models for the young Filipinos who will like to follow them,” he said.
