Sander Severino couldn’t contain his excitement after adding another feat to his long list of accomplishments in chess.
The Filipino FIDE master on Thursday won the inaugural online world chess championship organized by the International Physically Disabled Chess Association.
“Another dream come true,” Severino wrote on Facebook after downing International Master Igor Yarmonov of Ukraine in the final round to end up with 8.5 points, and winning all but one match.
Playing from Silay City, Negros Occidental, Severino acknowledged that some luck played a part in his victory.
“Thank you Lord. . sakto lng pag resign ni IM Yarmonov nagbrownout,” he shared in a Facebook post earlier.
Two other Filipinos also made it to the top 10 — Jasper Rom landed at sixth, and Henry Lopez at eighth.
Severino is no stranger to international success.
In the Asian Para Games in Jakarta in 2018, he took home four gold medals, one each in the men’s individual standard and rapid, and the team events.
In the ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur in 2017, he bagged two gold medals.
Last month, Severino finished second in the FIDE Online Cup for People with Disabilities.
