Instead of putting him down, decorated Pinoy amateur boxer Eumir Marcial should be given ample support in whatever career decision he makes, said former Olympian Monsour del Rosario.
"At a time of crisis, we need heroes like Eumir Marcial who is considered a top contender in the Tokyo Olympics and will turn pro, (it) is an athletes' dream come true," the multi-awarded taekwondo jin said.
Marcial, who will compete in the Tokyo Olympics next year, has been receiving rich offers from promoters and managers to turn pro, a development that did not sit well with boxing officials.
Del Rosario, who represented the Philippines in the 1988 Olympics, empathizes with Marcial.
"He should be allowed to turn pro since pro boxers are already allowed to fight in the Olympics," said Del Rosario, who is also the president of ASEAN Taekwondo
"Boxers have only a short span of life as a fighter. He should be given the chance to make a better life for himself. Who knows? He might be the first Olympic gold medalist we will have in the country and when he turns pro, he might bring us honor and glory like Senator Manny Pacquiao did."
Del Rosario added that Marcial should avoid getting embroiled in controversy.
"I want to join everyone to support him in any way and encourage our athletes that we can do it and make it to the Olympics as well," he said.
"My advice for Eumir is to focus on his boxing skills and mental preparedness and do not involve yourself in the corrupt world of sports."
Marcial has been getting offers from various promoters and managers since 2018. Some of them even dangled as much as P10 million as a signing bonus.
Among those who expressed interest in signing him is Pacquiao's MP Promotions.
