MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) The Magnolia Hotshots waxed hot in the third quarter to pull away from Columbian Dyip, eventually seizing a 110-103 victory in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
From a 52-all deadlock at the break, the Hotshots outscored Columbian, 33-21, in the pivotal third quarter to take control of the game. That included a run of 18 unanswered points that turned a 58-62 deficit into a 76-62 advantage with 4:36 to go in the period.
The Dyip managed to trim the deficit to single digits in the fourth frame, but were never able to get over the hump as the Hotshots secured their second win in a row.
"Today's defense, medyo 'yung depensa namin sa umpisa, 'di kami maka-depensa one on one, 'yung team defense namin, 'di ganoon ka-solid," said Magnolia coach Chito Victolero.
"Good thing, sa second half, kahit papaano, gumanda ang depensa namin," he added.
Neither team could gain control in a tight first half that saw 13 ties and six lead changes. Columbian looked poised to pull ahead after going up 62-58, off a slam dunk in transition by rookie guard CJ Perez.
But an and-1 by Ian Sangalang spurred Magnolia's scoring spree, and the Dyip were never able to recover. They got to within eight points, repeatedly, in the final frame, but the Hotshots always had an answer.
A bucket by Columbian's new import, Lester Prosper, made it 92-84 with 8:18 left, only for Sangalang to respond with five straight points. Columbian again got to within 8, 99-91, off a Glenn Khobuntin lay-up with under six minutes to go, but Mark Barroca came through with a difficult lay-up that restored a 10-point advantage.
The Dyip last threatened with 1:52 left off a Prosper lay-up that made it 106-98, but Sangalang found Rome dela Rosa wide open under the hoop for a big basket that made it a 10-point game, 108-98, with just 66 seconds left.
"We've had back-to-back-to-back games, at happy kami kasi kahit papaano, naka two out of three kami sa mahirap na schedule," said Victolero, whose team improved to 2-2 in the conference.
Sangalang put up 22 points, while Farr had 22 points and 11 rebounds of his own in just 25 minutes of action, as the import struggled with foul trouble. Paul Lee added 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Jio Jalalon had 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists in a superb performance.
Prosper contributed 26 points and 14 rebounds in his debut, while Perez finished with 18 markers. But the Dyip were undone in the third quarter, where they gave up 11 points to Lee alone and allowed Magnolia to make 48% of their field goals.
Columbian dropped to 1-4 in the conference.
