MANILA, Philippines -- Barangay Ginebra's hard-earned triumph over San Miguel Beer on Sunday was special in more ways than one.
The Gin Kings outlasted the Beermen, 110-107, in overtime, snapping a two-game skid in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup. The victory was one for the history books, as it was their 1,000th win as a franchise since they joined the league in 1979.
"It's special to be a part of a franchise like this, with the popularity it has and all the success," beamed Ginebra import Justin Brownlee.
"I think somebody was telling me that it was the second franchise to make a thousand (wins). (It's) just special to be a part of, and still a lot more wins, hopefully, in the future," he added.
Brownlee was instrumental in guiding Ginebra to the win, as he put up 39 points along with 15 boards and 5 assists.
Veteran point guard LA Tenorio, for his part, said it was meaningful for him to be part of another landmark achievement for the franchise.
"Maraming beses na ako naging part ng history dito sa Ginebra," he said. "I'm very thankful na naging part ulit ako ng ganoong milestone para sa franchise."
Tenorio is hopeful that the historic win will fuel Ginebra's drive as they try to defend their Commissioner's Cup title.
"We talked about it the last few games, na hopefully this game can turn things around for us," said Tenorio. "Ngayon, nakita namin kung ano 'yung positive, so 'yun lang. We'll look at video for sure, kung ano nagawa namin, and we'll see kung ano pa pwede namin i-improve for the next few games."
Ginebra returns to action on Sunday against NLEX at the Batangas City Coliseum.
