The Philippines lost its opening game against Cuba 11-2 in the 2019 World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) men’s softball world championship in Prague, Czech Republic, Friday night.
The Cubans peppered the Blu Boys starting pitcher Leo Barredo with 3 runs in the second inning to claim an early 3-0 lead.
The Blu Boys scored a run each in the next 2 frames, courtesy of Denmark Bathan and Ernesto Binarao, but Cuba retaliated with a 7-run inning.
The Blu Boys, who last qualified in the World Championships in 2015, will next face Botswana.
The 17th-ranked Philippines is grouped with Argentina, Botswana,
Cuba, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Asian champion Japan, and defending champion New Zealand.
Playing in Group B are Australia, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, the United States, and Venezuela.
The top 4 teams in each of the two groups will advance to the quarterfinals.
