The Netherlands’ Jeroen Maijers engaged a Singaporean rider in a heated battle for the purple jersey before the Dutchman picked up a good enough time to stay in front of the pack after Stage 2 in the 10th Le Tour de Filipinas Saturday.
The stage, which started in Pagbilao town, Quezon, and concluded at Vinzon’s Avenue in Daet, Camarines Norte, was ruled by Germany’s Mario Vogt.
Singaporean Goh Chun Huat of Malaysia’s Terengganu Inc. TSG Cycling Team spearheaded the 4-man breakaway group that included Vogt, who is riding for Team Sapura Cycling of Malaysia.
They kept their torrid pace that, at one point, Goh stole the lead from Meijers, who topped Stage 1. Meijers quickened the tempo in the final 40 kilometers, though, enough to regain the general classification lead with an aggregate time of 7:59:00.
Goh's overall time is at 7:59:45.
Meijers will continue to wear the lead jersey on Sunday’s 183.7-kilometer Stage 3 with participants being flagged off in front of the Daet Market in Basabas Beach and finishing at Rizal Avenue in Legazpi City, Albay.
