MANILA, Philippines -- Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) on Saturday mourned the passing of Nic Jorge, the founder of BEST Center Sports Inc. which kickstarted the career of many Filipino basketball players.
He was 78 years old.
The SBP called Jorge a "stalwart of our sport," an accomplished coach in both college and the professional ranks, who also led the Philippines in the 1978 FIBA World Cup.
His biggest contribution to Philippine basketball, however, was when he founded the MILO Best Center in 1978.
"His training program became the spark that led to the development of young kids who would become basketball legends themselves," the SBP said. "It took a visionary in Mr. Jorge to harness the Filipino youth's potential."
"A founding member of the SBP, Mr. Jorge left his mark in Philippine basketball, and his presence and wisdom will be terribly missed."
Jorge is survived by his wife, Marilyn, and four children.
