MANILA, Philippines—Rey Nambatac is fast becoming one of Rain Or Shine's reliable players, as he continues to step up for the team in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup.

Nambatac came up big for the Elasto Painters in back-to-back wins over Barangay Ginebra and Phoenix, helping Rain Or Shine recover from a slow start and even its record to 2-2.

He exploded for a career-high 30 points in Rain Or Shine's 104-81 blowout of the Kings, making 7 of 11 3-pointers. The former Letran guard followed up his heroics by coming through in the clutch as Rain Or Shine rallied to upstage the Fuel Masters, 89-82.

In the win against Ginebra, Nambatac credited a growing self-confidence behind his hot hand.

“Tiwala lang sa sarili. Syempre confident lang din ako na ’pag pinasahan ako, kailangan maisu-shoot ko,” Nambatac said in an article posted on ABS-CBN Sports.

“Kasi kung ako naman ’yung nagpasa tapos wide-open shot, talagang nakaka-frustrate ’yun. At ayaw kong mangyari ’yun sa mga teammates ko na mafu-frustrate sila. Kasi open shot tapos di masu-shoot? Kumpyansa lang talaga.”

He averaged 20.5 points in his team's last 2 games, earning for him a first-ever PBA Press Corps-Cignal Player of the Week honor from June 3 to 9.

Nambatac, picked 7th overall by the Elasto Painters in the 2017 draft, beat out 8 other candidates for the weekly citation.

Others who vied for the honor included Nambatac’s teammate Javee Mocon, Chris Banchero and Jeron Teng of Alaska, the TnT Katropa trio of Jayson Castro, Troy Rosario, and Roger Pogoy, NorthPort’s Robert Bolick, and Blackwater rookie Bobby Ray Parks.
