MANILA, Philippines—Cignal-Ateneo drew first blood in the 2019 PBA D-League finals with an impressive 101-66 rout of Centro Escolar University at FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan on Thursday.
The Blue Eagles used a huge second quarter to pull away from the hapless Scorpions, as they outscored CEU 29-15 in the pivotal frame to head into the break with a 54-31 lead.
Cignal-Ateneo led by as many as 39 points, 78-39, in the third.
"We knew coming into the game that they went through a very tough best-of-3 against St. Clare and we had more rest. We just wanted to make sure that we use our bench and I think that's what happened," said assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga.
Isaac Go led the way for Cignal-Ateneo, shooting 4 of 6 3-pointers to finish with 17 points. Thirdy Ravena contributed 15 points.
SJ Belangel scored 9 of his 12 points in the first half as the Blue Eagles recorded the most lopsided PBA D-League Finals game in history with the 35-point rout.
Game 2 is scheduled on Tuesday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Senegalese center Maodo Malick Diouf anchored the Scorpions in the losing effort with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
