MANILA—The 2019 Taiwan Excellence eSports Cup will be held in the Philippines for the first time, amid the emergence of local interest in electronic games.
Organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and Taiwan’s Bureau of Foreign Trade, the tournament boasts a P360,000 prize pool.
The competition will have game titles such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO) and League of Legends (LoL).
Registration starts on June 15, Saturday, with elimination rounds for CS:GO scheduled for July 6, 13, 20, and 27, and for LoL on August 3, 10, 17, and 24.
At least 2,000 participants around the country are expected to compete in the tournament, the grand finals of which will be held October 4 and 5 at SM North Edsa The Block, in Quezon City.
"Taiwan is known for its breakthrough electronics industry, with renowned innovations and quality products being developed for global distribution," said CT Wu, director of the Strategic Marketing Department at TAITRA.
"Now with Esports, we take pride in sharing that industry-leading brands are from Taiwan, with Filipino gamers."
Malaysia and Thailand are among the countries where the Taiwan Excellence eSports Cup has taken place.
