MANILA -- Six months after the UAAP finals, it was the same neck-and-neck affair for Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University.
Now in the 2018 FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup, though, it was still the same result.
With Thirdy Ravena leading the way, the Blue Eagles topped the Green Archers anew, 81-75, in overtime on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Ravena fired 17 points on top of five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks, while Ivorian reinforcement Angelo Kouame also made an impact with a 16-point, 18-rebound double-double as the UAAP champions re-asserted their mastery over their archrivals and registered a clean sweep of the elimination round.
The incoming third-year forward also put up five straight points inside the last two minutes to grant his team a 70-66 lead, but Aljun Melecio’s triple and Jollo Go’s buzzer-beating layup forced overtime.
There, Kouame made his presence felt and dropped all of Ateneo’s first eight points for a 79-75 edge.
La Salle would not be able to come any closer and the Blue Eagles wrapped up their ninth win in as many games.
“It was a tough game. I guess when green meets blue, you can’t expect a pretty game,” head coach Tab Baldwin said post-game.
After sweeping the elims, the boys from Katipunan now head to Greece for games against European clubs.
Santi Santillan paced the Green Archers with 19 points and nine rebounds while frontcourt partner Justine Baltazar posted a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double.
They end the elimination round at 7-2, but without a doubt, pushed their undefeated archrivals to their limit.
Meanwhile, San Beda University completed the cast of characters for the quarterfinals in Group A after walloping NCAA rival Mapua University with a 35-point haymaker, 95-60.
Javee Mocon scored 20 points in just 21 minutes of play while Eugene Toba chipped in 14 markers, six rebounds, and two blocks in the Red Lions’ third straight win coming from 3-2.
San Beda, Ateneo, La Salle, and the University of the Philippines make up the qualifiers for Group A, while De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, Far Eastern University, Adamson University, and Colegio de San Juan de Letran comprise those for Group B.
In other results, Lyceum of the Philippines University ended its campaign on a high note with back-to-back wins, this one coming at the expense of University of Sto. Tomas, 93-88.
