Eighteen year-old paddler Jann Mari Nayre has secured a spot in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, becoming the Philippines’ first-ever junior representative in table tennis in the meet.

Nayre, the youngest member of the Philippine National Table Tennis Team, had to go through the Rorotonga leg of the Youth Olympic Qualifiers in the Cook Islands to claim the historic berth.

Nayre recovered from a 1-4 loss to Ireland’s Cathcart Owen in the first round before sweeping through the rest of his assignments.

Paddlers from Australia, Jordan, and Canada fell to Nayre one by one in the second round, giving the Pinoy a berth in the championship round where he took down Vanish Jacobo of Panama, 4-2.

The table tennis event will take place from October 6 to October 18 at the Tecnópolis in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
