MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) KIA Motors on Monday officially introduced Filipino boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao as the new coach of its team that will be playing in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) next season.

In a press conference, KIA formally named the reigning WBO welterweight champion as their head coach, after initially trying to tab the "Pacman" as a playing coach.

“'Yung paglalaro, hindi ko pa alam ‘yan,” Pacquiao said in the press conference, as quoted by the official PBA Twitter account. “Ang focus ko ngayon ay ‘yung pagko-coach.”

Dyan Castillejo of ABS-CBN News reported that the team still has no name, but Pacquiao wants to have a "fast, strong, and disciplined team" that will be defense-oriented.

She added that Pacquiao is hoping to form a championship team in the next two to three years.

Pacquiao revealed that before falling in love with boxing, basketball was his sport.

“Before boxing, ang hilig ko ay basketball,” he said.

“Kailangan ko mapatunayan na hindi lamang sa boxing, kundi sa basketball ang aking gilas,” he also said.

Pacquiao, who has a fight scheduled for November 23, said he will make sure that he will give enough time for his training as well as his responsibilities as a congressman.

KIA is one of the three expansion teams that will join the PBA next season, along with NLEX and Blackwater Sports. -- With a report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
