MANILA, Philippines -- The University of the Philippines' (UP) campaign for the UAAP Season 82 men's basketball tournament received a boost, as the Fighting Maroons received the official backing of a digital payments company.

PayMaya Philippines and the UP men's basketball team announced their partnership on Thursday at the Launchpad.

"As a home-grown digital brand that aims to change the game for Filipino consumers and enterprises, the story of the UP men's basketball team, along with their hard work, grit, and passion for excellence, resonates very well with all of us at PayMaya," said Orlando B. Vea, the founder and chief executive officer of PayMaya Philippines, in a statement.

"The UP men's basketball team is extremely grateful for all the support that has come our way the past year, and we're more than glad to welcome PayMaya into the growing UP Fighting Maroons family," said UP coach Bo Perasol.

"As we gear up for the upcoming season, we need all the support we can get, and local brands such as PayMaya help us get to where we want to be," he added.

UP had an unforgettable Cinderella run in UAAP Season 81, as they made it all the way to the finals behind the heroics of season MVP Bright Akhuetie, young gunner Juan Gomez de Liano, and veteran guard Paul Desiderio.

They were eventually swept in the best-of-3 championship series by the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

PayMaya, which has previously supported a team in the Premier Volleyball League and is also backing the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, will provide the Fighting Maroons a digital way of spending their allowances through their own PayMaya account.

The players will be able to kickstart their cashless living, allowing them to use their money in a secure and convenient way. The Fighting Maroons received their very own PayMaya cards during Thursday's launch.
