MANILA, Philippines – After wrapping up a glittering collegiate career, two-time UAAP Finals MVP Bryan Bagunas is now in Japan, where he is in talks with V.League club Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler.
Bagunas was the Finals MVP when National University (NU) won the UAAP men's volleyball crowns in Seasons 80 and 81. He was also the MVP of this year's men's volleyball tournament, after leading the Bulldogs to a dominant campaign.
After NU defeated Far Eastern University in the finals, Bagunas bared that he intends to take his talents to Japan, following the footsteps of former five-time UAAP MVP Marck Espejo of Ateneo de Manila University and former NU stars Jaja Santiago and Dindin Santiago-Manabat.
He left for Japan on Sunday and is currently in Oita.
"'Pag dating ko doon, training agad, then pag-uusapan 'yung situation ko doon," said Bagunas.
"Sobrang masaya (ako), kasi siyempre, may chance ako na makapag-laro ng international. Kahit sino naman na andito sa kalagayan ko, magiging masaya," he also said. "Isa din 'to sa naging pangarap ko, kaya sobrang sarap sa feeling."
Bagunas totaled 285 points for NU in his final season, converting 53.49% of his attacks. He was also the league's Best Server. In his last game for the Bulldogs, Bagunas exploded for a career-best 35 points to help his team clinch the Season 81 crown.
In Japan, he hopes to keep improving and become a more well-rounded player.
"Unang-una, 'yung disiplina ng player dito, 'yun 'yung gusto ko unang ma-adopt talaga," said Bagunas. "'Yung service-receive ko, gusto ko pa na mas ma-improve ko 'yun."
Ateneo's Espejo played for Oita Miyoshi last year, serving as their Asian import. Weisse Adler went 4-23 last season, and missed the Final 6.
