MANILA, Philippines -- PetroGazz leaned on a pair of talented imports to stun defending champion Creamline in straight sets to open its campaign in the 2019 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Angels claimed a 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 triumph over the Cool Smashers, who had won both the Open and Reinforced Conferences last season.
Cuban national team mainstay Wilma Salas unleashed a match-best 20 points while Janisa Johnson unloaded 18 to power the Angels to the upset.
It didn't help Creamline's cause that PVL MVP Alyssa Valdez had to be helped out of the court in the second set after suffering an ankle sprain. The set was tied at 16 when Valdez slipped while chasing for the ball. The former Ateneo star would not return to the game.
The Arnold Laniog-mentored Angels also spoiled the debut of Creamline's new coach, Chinese Li Huanning, who took over from Tai Bundit.
Creamline's Venezuelan import, Ale Blanco, had 9 points in her debut while comebacking import Kuttika Kaewpin of Thailand had 8 markers. Valdez scored 5 points before suffering the injury.
