BORACAY, Aklan - Two of the Philippine Volleyball Team's pride Sisi Rondina and Bernadette Pons defeated Team Japan to enter the Round of 12 of the FIVB World Tour Boracay Open 2019 in Boracay Island.
Team Philippines outsmarted Team Japan in the first and second sets of the game.
The five-foot-six UAAP Most Valuable Player Rondina delivered numerous spikes to beat the much taller Japanese volleyball players. Pons on the other hand managed to defend and stall the opponent's striking ball.
It was a do-or-die game for the Philippine team since they need to defeat the much-experienced Japanese volleyball players to enter the Round of 12.
"Ginusto lang talaga namin na makuha ang game. Much practice lang," the 5'7" open spiker Pons said.
Rondina said beating Japan was a challenge since they lost to the same players during the 1st FIVB tour in Manila last year.
"Challenging siya talaga. Hindi po namin ini-expect na ganun 'yung outcome. Naka mind set lang talaga kami," she said.
The World Tour Boracay Open 2019 is the second league of the FIVB this year next to Manila.
Seventeen countries are participating in the event, mostly from Europe, Asia and the United States. Seven teams came from the Philippines, battling in the men's and women's division against foreign players.
The volleyball tournament will serve as training ground for those who are aiming to join the Philippine Team in the upcoming SEA GAMES this year, according to organizer Bea Tan.
The 3-day event also promotes the new Boracay after it underwent massive rehabilitation last year.
