Gani Lawal registered a 20-20 game, and Meralco used a strong second quarter to beat Columbian Dyip 101-92 in the PBA Commissioner's Cup at Araneta Coliseum on Friday.

Lawal finished with 25 points and 27 rebounds to lead all 5 Meralco starters in double-digit scoring, as the Bolts evened their record to 1-1.

The Dyip fell to 0-2.

Baser Amer contributed 21 points and 5 3-pointers, and Trevis Jackson chipped in 17 points and 4 triples, helping Meralco bounce back from an opening-day loss to Blackwater.

Meralco led by as many as 17 points — 65-48 midway through the third quarter — but Columbian didn't wave the white flag that quickly.

The Dyip reduced the deficit to 75-68 late in the same quarter, fell by double digits again early in the fourth, then came close at 94-88 with 2:28 left in the game courtesy of a Rashawn McCarthy basket.

But Columbian couldn't make a bucket to threaten further, and Lawal and Cliff Hodge scored from the floor each for Meralco to put the Dyip away.

Kyle James Barone finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds, while CJ Perez added 22 points to pace Columbian.
