UAAP: Dominant NU women's basketball team to receive Award of Excellence 1

MANILA, Philippines – Dominance has been the word most often used to describe the National University (NU) women's basketball team.

Season 81 was no different, as the Lady Bulldogs won their fifth consecutive women's basketball crown – while also setting a record with 80 straight victories. It is the longest winning streak in collegiate sports.

The NU women's team will thus be honored with the Award of Excellence in the 2019 Chooks-to-Go Collegiate Press Corps Awards.

The Lady Bulldogs are bannered by senior guard Ria Nabalan, bruising forward Jack Animam, Congolese center Rhena Itesi, and feisty wingers Monique del Carmen and Kaye Pingol.

The annual awards night held by the Collegiate Press Corps, composed of scribes from print and online outfits covering the NCAA and UAAP, will take place on Monday, May 27, at Amelie Hotel Manila in Malate, Manila.

This marks the second year in a row that the Collegiate Press Corps will honor achievers from the women's division. They had bestowed the same honor to NU's Afril Bernardino last year.

Also set to be honored are Ateneo de Manila University's Angelo Kouame and San Beda University's Javee Mocon as this season's Pivotal Players, while Lyceum of the Philippines University's CJ Perez and Adamson University's Sean Manganti are cited as this year's Impact Players in the awards night.

The Ivorian Kouame won Rookie of the Year honors while being the pillar of strength in the paint for the Blue Eagles in their second straight UAAP men's basketball championship.

Mocon emerged as one of the figures in the Red Lions' three-peat accomplishment, leading to him being named as the Finals MVP.

Perez, on the other hand, led the Pirates to their second straight Finals appearance in his final playing year, while Manganti has been the difference-maker for the Soaring Falcons in their Final 4 run this season.
