MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine women's team opened their campaign in the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup on a high note, as they crushed Samoa, 21-1, in their first game on Tuesday in Changsha, China.
It took the Filipinas just seven minutes and 34 minutes to record the dominant win. Afril Bernardino had 8 points, while Clare Castro added 6 markers.
Sharpshooter Janine Pontejos ended the game with a two-pointer to give the 10th-seeded Philippines a winning start in the qualifying draw.
Carolett Autufuga was the only player to score for Samoa, which entered as the 18th seed.
However, the Philippine men's team was unable to match their women's counterparts.
The Filipinos bowed to Thailand, 14-11, in the first game of the qualifying draw and also lost Ricci Rivero to an ankle injury late in the game.
RJ Abarrientos had 4 points, Barkley Ebona and Rhayyan Amsali each had 2, and Rivero finished with 3 markers before sitting out the last 3 minutes of the ball game.
It remains to be seen if Rivero will return to action for the Philippines.
The men's team will play Qatar, while the women's team take on Chinese-Taipei later in the day.
