MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) The Alaska Aces used a big third quarter to pull away from Columbian Dyip en route to a comfortable 111-98 win, opening their campaign in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup campaign on a good note on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Trailing 54-48 at the half, the Aces outscored Columbian, 34-13, in the critical third period, allowing them to seize control of the game. They went on to lead by as much as 20 points in the fourth period, a cushion big enough to withstand the Dyip's last-ditch rally.

Import Chris Daniels had 25 points and 16 rebounds to lead Alaska, while Chris Banchero added 20 points. Simon Enciso added 19 points and 8 assists.

"Always good to start off with a win," said Alaska coach Alex Compton. "This game was really important for us."

"I thought our guards really stepped up in the second half. Simon got going and made some 3s, and moved the ball well. JVee (Casio) did a great job of running the team," he added.

Enciso waxed hot in the third period, scoring 11 points, while Banchero and Daniels had 6 each to allow the Aces to pull away. They built a 15-point cushion, 82-67, heading into the payoff period.

Alaska went on to lead, 91-71, with 9:23 to play off a nifty lay-up by Banchero. But Columbian import Kyle Barone took matters into his own hands, going on a personal scoring spree to trim the deficit to 10 points, 91-81, with still 7:23 to play.

Rookie guard JP Calvo helped Columbian trim the lead further, anchoring an 11-6 exchange that kept their team within striking distance, 101-92, with still 3:22 left. But he also committed back-to-back turnovers in crunch time, and buckets by Jeron Teng and Enciso allowed the Aces to cruise to the win.

Barone finished with 30 points and 22 rebounds, while CJ Perez had 19 points. Calvo finished with 10 points and 7 assists, making all five of his field goal attempts.
