It was a long time coming for Terrence Romeo, one of the most naturally gifted players of his generation who struggled to parlay his individual talent into team success.
On Wednesday, Romeo finally won his first title when San Miguel Beer beat Magnolia 72-71 to win its fifth straight PBA Philippine Cup title.
It was a sweet achievement for Romeo, who said he never tasted a victory like this in his life.
“Ito ang first championship ko simula na naging basketball player ako, kahit high school, college at PBA D-League days ko,” the former Far Eastern University standout acknowledged.
Romeo brought his prolific offense to the PBA in 2013 and along the way he won the scoring title thrice.
But after a promising start to his career at GlobalPort, he suddenly bounced around the league moving to TNT before joining San Miguel.
Romeo said he realized that it takes more than just getting buckets to become a champion.
Romeo said that he found out how to contribute to the team even without scoring. He said in the next conferences he will focus more on improving his defense.
“Nakakatuwa, maraming nakaka-appreciate sa defense ko, pinag-aaralan ko pa ang sistema kung paano ko maia-apply ang talent ko,” he said.
With the title, Romeo said he can now finally silence his harsh critics.
