Team Lakay's top bantamweight Kevin Belingon was picked as the top contender in the first edition of ONE Championship’s official athlete rankings.
This means it is possible for him to get another ONE bantamweight title shot against nemesis and reigning titlist Bibiano Fernandes.
“I was expecting just to be at least in the top five or top ten before this ranking was released,” Belingon said.
“I am happy that I am still at No.1. I wasn’t expecting that because I lost the last time, but I am still there so there’s a chance to face Bibiano again.”
The two have already figured in 4 clashes, making the rivalry one of the most heated in ONE promotion's history.
Fernandes won their first meeting in 2016, and Belingon evened the score in 2 years later. In 2019, Belingon lost the title via disqualification in the third match, and the Brazilian fighter decisively retained the title in the fourth bout.
Belingon remains the No.1 contender in the bantamweight class, but acknowledged he still needs to fight his way back to contention.
“Let’s see who I face next, but I’ll be ready. Training is affected now because of the quarantine, so we’re all limited to home workouts. When the quarantine ends, I’m back to hard training again,” Belingon said.
