MANILA, Philippines -- Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Wednesday formally accepted its hosting duties for the 96th season of the NCAA, in the midst of uncertainty brought about by the novel coronavirus pandemic.
What should have been a formal ceremony instead took place on Viber, when the NCAA Policy Board approved the resolution by Arellano University president Atty. Francisco Paulino Cayco "to formally turn over the hosting of NCAA Season 96 to Letran."
Letran president Rev. Fr. Clarence Marquez, OP replied that their school "graciously accepts the hosting duties."
"We express our heartfelt gratitude to Arellano University for their excellent leadership of NCAA 95, and to our fellow member schools for their solid and steady support," he added.
Letran's hosting of NCAA Season 96 figures to be a challenging one.
The league was forced to terminate Season 95 ahead of schedule due to the COVID-19 outbreak, putting an early end to the volleyball tournaments while other events, including beach volleyball and athletics, were not held at all.
Already, the outbreak is affecting the 96th season. Peter Cayco of the NCAA Management Committee has confirmed that they are proposing that the season starts in May 2021. There is also the possibility of cutting down events to just the mandatory sports -- basketball, volleyball, swimming and athletics.
Letran is facing its own issues as the university is reportedly downsizing its athletics operations as a result of the pandemic. Other than limiting its athletic scholarships, the university is reportedly withdrawing from several events, including volleyball.
Nonetheless, Letran said it will "shepherd the NCAA to rise to the challenge of promoting youth empowerment and excellence through sports."
"Soon, the plans for NCAA Season 96 shall be presented, observing the 'new normal,' assuring our students, supporters, followers and fans about safety and health standards of events and venues, showcasing our quality camaraderie and competition, instilling discipline, inspiring us with the best performances of our school teams and student athletes," Letran added.
