MANILA - Former amateur boxer Anthony Villanueva, the first Filipino to win a silver medal in the Olympics, passed away on Tuesday morning.

He was 69.

According to Ronnie Nathanielsz’s report to Philboxing, Villanueva had been bedridden for more than 2 years after suffering his third heart attack.

Villanueva, son of Olympic bronze medalist Jose Villanueva, competed at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a featherweight.

He was close to winning the gold medal but suffered a controversial decision to Soviet Union's Stanislav Stepashkin in the finals.

Villanueva had financial problems after being saddled with health problems in his latter years.

ABS-CBN's Dyan Castillejo featured the Filipino Olympian in 2010 to bring his plight to the public's attention.
