MANILA, Philippines – Nonito Donaire Sr., the father of former world champion Nonito Donaire Jr., is now part of the coaching staff of Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao's camp announced on Tuesday that the elder Donaire is set to lend his expertise to the "Pacman" as he prepares for his bout against Argentina's Lucas Matthysse on July 15 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Donaire Sr. was added to Pacquiao's team a week after he formally opened his training camp.
"Donaire will serve as one of the assistant coaches," said Pacquiao, who did two trial rounds with the father of Nonito Jr.
Donaire Sr. had previously served as his own son's trainer.
"So far, so good," said Pacquiao. "I am happy with my current team."
Pacquiao took two days off on Saturday and Sunday to rest and relax, even going scuba diving on Sunday.
The "Pacman" is looking to put together an all-Filipino coaching staff in his bid to win an 11th world title against Matthysse, a dangerous puncher who has won 36 matches via knockout.
Buboy Fernandez will act as head coach, to be assisted by Nonoy Neri. Pacquiao will soon name another coach for strength and conditioning.
