Inaugural Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) champion Batangas City Athletics-Tanduay acquired former FEU Tamaraws standout Arvin Tolentino and ex-PBA player Jason Melano to beef up its squad for the coming season.
Batangas team executive Jean Alabanza said Tolentino and former Blackwater player Melano will be a big boost.
“Jason Melano and Arvin Tolentino. They should help,” Alabanza said in Fox Sports.ph. “They bring youth and versatility at the 3 and 4 spots.”
Tolentino was supposed to join the PBA rookie draft, but committed first to playing for the Athletics.
“Yes we signed him already. He’s ready to play,” Alabanza added. “He plans to join the draft, but that’s next year and that’s not 100 percent sure.”
Alabanza said the Athletics wanted to add depth to the team.
“I think we relied too much on key players for most part of the season. We weren’t able to really develop our bench which could have helped after we lost 4 guys to the PBA,” she said.
“That’s why we’re looking to add youth, which we also lacked. Depth is very important in our league because of the long and tiring season.”
