Football: Azkals bunched together with powerhouses in Suzuki Cup group

The Philippine Azkals find themselves in tough company when the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup rolls in later this year.

The Azkals, who made history in March by clinching a spot in the AFC Asian Cup for the first time, are in Group B of the Suzuki Cup, alongside defending champion Thailand, 2016 runner-up Indonesia, former champion Singapore, and the qualification round winner between Brunei and Timor-Leste.

The Azkals will try to bounce back from a disappointing 2016 campaign, in which they placed third in their group, finishing winless, managing only 2 points, and missing the knockout stages.

Coincidentally, the Azkals also battled against Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia in the 2016 Suzuki Cup group stage.

Fighting it out in Group A are Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

The 2018 Suzuki Cup will run from November 8 to December 15.

The tournament will be a good test for the Azkals as they get ready for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, which kicks off on January 5.
