MANILA, Philippines – Sinag Pilipinas smoked Singapore, 82-56, on Friday to nab the Philippines' 7th Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) title at the OCBC Arena in Singapore.
The Gilas Cadets' victory over Singapore sealed the country's perfect 5-0 run in the 11th edition of the tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the FIBA Asia Championship in China this September.
Naturalized player Marcus Douthit led the way for the Filipinos with 16 points, while Kiefer Ravena and Jiovani Jajalon added 15 and 12, respectively.
Sinag Pilipinas was comfortable ahead of their Singaporean rivals, 26-19, in the first period. The Pinoys hiked the advantage to 33 points, 65-32, in the third canto.
Singapore launched a big fight in the payoff period but could not get any closer than 26 points.
Sinag Pilipinas eventually took the overall championship and formalized their entry to the FIBA Asia Championship, which will serve as the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
