MANILA -- San Beda University ripped apart a disorganized Gilas Cadets side with a punishing 91-70 blowout win Sunday to bounce back from a previous setback in Group A of the 12th FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Red Lions bared their teeth right from the get-go to bury the Asian Games-bound national team early and cruised to their second win in three outings.
“My boys played today. I challenged them today that the character of the team will be tested, on how we will comeback after that loss against Ateneo,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez, whose wards played their last game before flying to Miami, Florida next week for their US training.
James Canlas led the Red Lions, who will back in the tournament on June 1 against University of the Philippines, with 16 points while Jeramer Cabanag had 15. Donald Tankoua finished with a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds while Javee Mocon had eight markers and 10 boards for San Beda.
The Red Lions ballooned their lead to 78-47 off a fastbreak layup from Calvin Oftana with 6:28 left in the game.
Gilas tried to mount a rally that came a little too late, bringing their deficit down to 80-62 with 4:01 left off a Ricci Rivero slam dunk.
But San Beda answered with a couple of baskets to quell the run and walk away with a morale-boosting win.
National University Bullpup Carl Tamayo spearheaded the Gilas Cadets with 13 points while Kobe Paras and JJ Alejandro chipped in with 11 markers each.
