All systems go for 2017 Palarong Pambansa in Antique

SAN JOSE, Antique - The Department of Education and the Provincial Government of Antique have already given the green light for the opening of 2017 Palarong Pambansa here on Sunday.

President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to grace the occasion, according to some sources from the local police and executives of Antique.

The construction of a 40-meter grandstand extension, VIP stage, additional lawn tennis courts, and rubberized track oval have already been completed as of Thursday.

Portable toilets and newly constructed comfort rooms are also in place at the Evelio B. Javier Sports Complex in time for the formal opening.

DepEd regional public information officer Lea Belleza said they are now in the final stage of preparation, as they address concerns about lodging. For instance, the local government of Antique has only distributed more than 9,000 mattresses out of the 14,000 that have been committed.

But power and water supply in the billeting areas have not been a problem so far, according to the provincial government of Antique. 

While there was a shortage of water supply in Moscoso Rios Elementary School where delegates from Region 3 are being accommodated, but remedies are already being undertaken to solve the problem.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police has stepped up security after a looting incident happened early Wednesday morning inside the Antique National School victimizing athletes from Western Visayas.

The suspects, who are all minors, were immediately arrested. Stolen items were also recovered, including shoes and uniforms. 

Additional police personnel from Police Regional Office 6 will be deployed on Thursday.
