MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University hacked out a thrilling 5-4 triumph over Far Eastern University (FEU) in the UAAP Season 80 men's football tournament at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Koko Gaudiel netted a first-half brace while Sam Lim, Christian Castillo and Ryan Haosen also entered the scoresheet for the Blue Eagles to improve to 31 points.
Ateneo has a chance to clinch the top spot when they take on league-leading University of the Philippines in the final elimination matchday at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
The Fighting Maroons, who were idle in the penultimate day of elims, have 33 points on 10 wins and three draws.
In other matches, Steven Anotado and Marvin Bricenio scored as University of Santo Tomas (UST) blanked National University (NU), 2-0, while University the East (UE), seeking to end its season on a high note, downed De La Salle University, 3-1.
With the Green Archers' loss, the Growling Tigers locked up the third seed in the Final 4. UST currently has 25 points, while La Salle has 20 to slide to the fourth spot.
Mar Diano scored twice in the first half while Mark Lerion also found the back of the net for UE, which rose at 19 points in solo fifth.
The Bulldogs remained at 16 points in sixth spot, while the Tamaraws still sit at seventh place with 10 points.
