MANILA - Ateneo veteran Kat Tolentino remains fully focused on the Lady Eagles' campaign in UAAP Season 81, amid loud discussions of her MVP candidacy and questions about her final year of eligibility.
Tolentino has emerged as one of the top MVP candidates in the women's volleyball tournament after ending the first round as the No. 4 scorer with 107 total points, the No. 4 spiker with a 31.34 percent success rate, and the No. 3 blocker with an average of 0.59 block per set.
She was a massive factor in Ateneo's six-game winning streak to end the first round, and has only become better and better as the Lady Eagles stretched their streak to nine games.
But the MVP race is not even on Tolentino's mind at this point in Season 81.
"What Coach O (Coach Oliver Almadro) always says is individual awards come with team success," said Tolentino.
"So I'm more focused on our main goal which is, of course, the championship, and as long as we get that, any other award is not really a big concern or something important for me right now," she added.
"We just really want that trophy."
The 24-year-old also dismissed questions about her final season for the Lady Eagles. Tolentino still has one more year left to play, but made it clear that she has not made a decision about it yet.
"I'm graduating school this year, but I still have one more year of eligibility," said the Business Management student.
"I'm still not sure (about my final year)," she said. "I wanna focus on this season, and how this season goes. So there's no decision."
Tolentino admits that she has yet to think about playing next year, as she has focused on her energies on leading the Lady Eagles to success in Season 81.
"I think for me it's more important to focus on the UAAP now, then once we reach our goals as a team, then I can look into that so we'll see," she said.
The Fil-Canadian spiker was once again superb in Ateneo's three-set win over Far Eastern University on Wednesday, scoring 11 points as the Lady Eagles cruised to a 25-21, 25-10, 25-18 triumph. She is now averaging 15.3 points for the Lady Eagles, who improved to 9-1 and clinched a Final 4 playoff with their latest win.
They will try to clinch a semifinals spot on Sunday when they play National University at the Araneta Coliseum.
