Team Lakay’s Eduard Folayang admitted committing a huge mistake during his rematch against Shinya Aoki last Sunday.
This cost him the title and ended his second reign as ONE lightweight champion.
“It’s not our night. I made a huge mistake on my part. Although I know that when Shinya gets the opportunity for the takedown, he won’t be wasting it,” Folayang said in ABS-CBN Sports.
“I think my main fault was trying to escape his side mount carelessly — that’s when he capitalized and put on the choke.”
Folayang was put to sleep by Aoki who used an arm-triangle to choke the wind out of the Filipino fighter in the first round.
“It’s his night. It’s a lesson for me not to be complacent in anything, though we all know that the ground game is his area of expertise,” he said.
Folayang added that the Japanese crowd had Aoki going. The bout took place at a fully packed Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan, which is Aoki’s turf.
Now, Folayang has to make his comeback and hopefully get another shot at the title.
"It is just a matter of learning,” he said. “That’s life.”
