MANILA, Philippines -- Volleyball has taught Cherry Nunag plenty of lessons that she now applies to her new role as host of "Kalye Confessions," the newest segment of ABS-CBN S+A's "The Score."

As an athlete, Nunag learned to manage her time and to build relationships with the people around her.

As a host, she knows those lessons will be key to her success.

"Iba 'yung turo sa akin ng volleyball," says Nunag. "'Yung makipag-kapwa tao, kung paano mo pagkakasiyahin 'yung oras mo, 'yung tiwala sa mga taong nakapaligid sa'yo."

Nunag admittedly endured "first-game jitters" when she started hosting, much like a player who feels a cold sweat when they step onto the court.

"Noong nag-start 'yung shooting, kinakabahan na ako," she said. "Tinatanong ko 'yung sarili ko na, 'Kaya ko ba talaga?'"

As soon as she relaxed and got into the conversation, however, Nunag realized that she just had to be herself.

"Noong lumabas 'yung pilot episode, ang dami na nagme-message sa akin," she shares. "Saka ko lang na-realize na kaya ko pala, tama pala 'yung mga ginagawa ko."

As Luzon is still under enhanced community quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nunag is unable to take another celebrity athlete out for a drive.

However, with the help of technology, fans of the segment can look forward to another episode of "Kalye Confessions" as it launches a Stay at Home edition via video chat.

For Nunag, what makes "Kalye Confessions" special is that her guests are comfortable enough to be themselves, as they are talking to a fellow athlete.

"Iba kasi makipag-usap kapag player to player," she explains. "Iba kapag komportable ka sa kausap mo, and naiintindihan ka noong kausap mo."

Nunag also displays proper time management in accepting this gig while her Petro Gazz team is preparing for this year's Premier Volleyball League (PVL).

Not wasting time, Nunag grabbed the opportunity to explore new things and other passions. After all, her friends had always encouraged her to pursue this path ever since, as she is known to effortlessly make people laugh.

Nunag says she takes her hosting cues from someone known to be outrageously funny.

"Siyempre, Vice Ganda," she says. "Sobrang funny niya kasi, then ang bilis niya din mag-isip ng ijo-joke niya."

Nunag follows the footsteps of fellow athletes such as Alyssa Valdez, Michele Gumabao, Gretchen Ho, and Beau Belga who all began their careers on the court but were eventually welcomed by ABS-CBN Sports as hosts or analysts.

With the help of the sports arm of the country's leading media and entertainment company, they are able to step out of their comfort zone and find success outside of the court.
