MANILA – De La Salle middle blocker Lourdes Clemente found herself on the receiving end of criticism after a brutal performance against University of the Philippines (UP) in the UAAP Season 81 tournament last Sunday.

Clemente, who is playing in her first and last year for La Salle after an NCAA stint with Perpetual Help, had 6 points against UP, but was best remembered for her service error towards the end of the match.

The Lady Spikers were already down two sets and trailing 19-23 in the third frame when Clemente trooped to the service line. But she launched a very poor serve: the ball didn't even clear the net and the awful error put UP at match point.

Clemente, a former Best Blocker in the NCAA, was determined to make up for her subpar outing.

"Pag nag-service ako, tapos bina-bash ako ng crowd, parang nagkaroon ako ng doubt," admitted Clemente.

"After ng game na 'yun, sabi ko sa sarili ko, babawi ako. Prove them wrong," she vowed.

Her performance against National University (NU) on Wednesday went a long way towards silencing her critics – at least for the time being. After committing 5 service errors against UP, she only had one miscue from the line against the Lady Bulldogs.

Moreover, Clemente was a force at the net, tallying 5 kill blocks en route to a 9-point performance. The Lady Spikers claimed a 25-20, 25-18, 25-10 triumph over the young Lady Bulldogs to return to the win column.

"Nag-focus talaga ako," Clemente said. "Kasi last time, ang first ko po muna is sa palo talaga. Siguro, nakalimutan ko po yung service, masyado akong nag-focus sa net."

"Kaya pagdating ko sa service area, eh pag hindi ako nabigyan sa harap, parang nagd-doubt ako," she admitted.

Clemente was not the only La Salle player to clean up her game after their loss to UP. The entire team cut back on their errors: after committing 37 unforced errors against the Lady Maroons, they only had 10 against the Lady Bulldogs.

This, according to Coach Ramil de Jesus, went a long way in their swift win.

"Kung 37 errors ba naman, halos isang set at kalahati ang binigay mong point sa kalaban, paano ka pa mananalo noon?" he pointed out.

"So sabi ko, pag na-minimize natin yung errors, malaki ang chance manalo," he added.
