MANILA — University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University will tangle in a crucial match on Saturday, as both programs aspire to make it to the semifinals of UAAP women’s volleyball.
UST-FEU begins at 4 p.m. at the Arena in San Juan, after De La Salle University and University of the East clash at 2 p.m.
The Growling Tigresses (6-4) and the Lady Tamaraws (5-5) have a thin margin for error, as they're locked in a tight playoff race with National University (7-4) and University of the Philippines (6-5).
Ateneo leads the league with a 9-2 record, followed by defending champion La Salle at second with an 8-2 card.
UST is fresh off a 25-12, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19 win over also-ran Adamson.
UST coach Kungfu Reyes said his team must improve from its win against the Lady Falcons, who managed to get the third set despite the Tigresses having an easy time in the first two frames.
"Nanalo kami pero hindi pa rin ganoon kaganda ang panalo namin," Reyes said in an interview with ABS-CBN Sports. "Hindi na ako tumayo (para kausapin sila). Hinayaan ko na sila na maglaro na sila-sila lang muna. Iisa lang naman ang gusto namin ipakita sa mga players na kung hindi kayo magtrabaho, tatalunin ka ng kalaban.”
(It was a win, but it was an ugly win. I didn't get up to talk to them. I just let them play on their own, which is my way of showing them that if you're not going to work hard, you'll get beat.)
FEU, meanwhile, wants to rebound after a gut-wrenching 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, 21-25, 15-8 defeat to Ateneo.
"Iyong nangyari, dahil iyon sa lapses namin, pero iwo-work out pa rin namin," FEU coach Shaq delos Santos said. "Hindi kami titigil, since last four games na lang."
(We'll work on the lapses for sure. We won't stop.)
