Yap, Abueva lead PBA All-Star poll

MANILA – San Mig Coffee’s James Yap and Alaska rookie Calvin Abueva lead the top vote-getters for the upcoming 2013 PBA All-Star Game in Digos, Davao del Sur.

According to the league’s website, Yap is clearly headed to a 10th PBA All-Star appearance as he tops the guards with 22,241 votes.

Coming in at second place is Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa with 16,097, followed by Alaska’s Cyrus Baguio (12,847), San Mig Coffee’s PJ Simon (10,053), and Alaska’s JV Casio (8,571).

Abueva, meanwhile, leads the race among forwards/centers with 20,227 votes.

He is followed by Petron’s Arwind Santos (18,557), Jay Washington (15,871), San Mig Coffee’s Joe Devance (14,648), and Ginebra’s Chris Ellis (12,596).

The top two guards and top three centers/forwards at the close of the poll will make up the first five of the PBA All-Stars who will face Gilas Pilipinas in the All-Star main event.

The reserves will be chosen by the PBA mentors. Alaska Aces’ Luigi Trillo will coach the team.

The balloting will end on March 24, Sunday.

The PBA All-Stars will deviate from the usual North versus South format to prepare the Gilas Pilipinas team for the coming 2013 FIBA Asia Championship in Manila.

The 2013 PBA All-Star Game is scheduled on May 5.
