MANILA, Philippines -- University of Santo Tomas rookie Eya Laure added another play to her already expansive highlight reel when she blocked Ateneo veteran Maddie Madayag in the third set of their UAAP Season 81 game on Wednesday.
Laure's block was notable as she rejected Madayag's running hit -- one of the most formidable sights in the UAAP this year. Afterward, she stared down the Ateneo veteran, then twirled slowly before celebrating with her teammates.
Madayag ultimately had the last laugh: she scored 23 points, including a record-setting 11 blocks, and the Lady Eagles came from behind to down the Golden Tigresses, 19-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-11.
Afterward, Madayag insisted that she didn't even notice what Laure did.
"Actually I didn't see it, I didn't see it," she said.
But Madayag says Laure could not be blamed for her actions, saying: "It's just part of the game."
"You can't really do anything, kasi you're hyped eh," she pointed out. "Sino namang hindi maha-hype pag naka-block ka, 'di ba?"
While she and the Lady Eagles came away with the victory -- their seventh straight of the tournament -- Madayag was admittedly impressed with Laure.
"Promising 'yung bata eh, sobra," she said of the UST rookie.
"As in nakikita mo yung talent niya, na may maaasahan yung UST. Napakagaling na bata," Madayag added.
Laure finished the game with 21 points.
