MANILA, Philippines -- The NCAA Policy Board on Thursday officially terminated the league's 95th season.
The Board, led by president Francisco Cayco of host Arellano University, made the decision after a consultation with all members.
"First and foremost what was considered was the safety of the athletes, students, fans, and officials," Management Committee chairman Peter Cayco said in a statement.
All league activities have been suspended since March 9 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The pandemic has had a massive impact on the NCAA's season, with the league opting to stop its events a number of times as a precautionary measure before the Management Committee declared that they were suspending activities "until further notice" 10 days ago.
Peter Cayco confirmed last Saturday that they had advised the Policy Board to cancel the rest of the season, a proposal that has since been approved.
Among the affected sports are volleyball and football, along with beach volleyball which has yet to start. Also wiped out of the league's schedule is the annual cheerleading competition.
"Eligibility matters of athletes being raised shall be discussed later," Cayco said.
Cayco had earlier said that affected athletes shall be granted one more year of eligibility.
As of Wednesday, there are 202 cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines, with 17 fatalities.
