MANILA -- (UPDATED) University of Santo Tomas (UST) earned a share of second place in the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament, after sweeping University of the East (UE) on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Golden Tigresses leaned on a superb spiking game from graduating veteran Sisi Rondina, along with another solid effort from rookie ace Eya Laure as they registered a 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 triumph over the Lady Warriors.

It was UST's third consecutive win of the tournament, giving them a 5-2 record at the end of the first round. They are currently tied for second place with defending UAAP champions De La Salle University.

"Nag-trabaho lang talaga kami," said Rondina, who had 17 points, all but one coming off kills. "Wala kaming pinabayaang opportunity, and lahat ng mga ine-ensayo namin, lumabas."

"Lahat po kami, nag-step up and willing gawin lahat," added Laure, who had 15 points on 11 kills, two blocks, and two aces.

It was a straightforward triumph for the Golden Tigresses, who completed the win in just an hour and 26 minutes.

After rolling to a 2-0 lead, the Tigresses found some resistance in the third set as the Lady Warriors came to within four points, 22-18. It was UST's errors that allowed UE to come back, as Caitlyn Viray sent her serve short before Laure committed an attack fault.

The Lady Warriors were still within striking distance, 23-19, before Laure finished off a combination play to put her team at match point. A mishit by Dimdim Pacres kept UE alive, but only briefly. Rondina finished off a long rally with a booming crosscourt hit to hand the Tigresses the win.

"Trabaho lang talaga," said Rondina. "'Yun ang key namin every time."

This is UST's best finish in the first round since Kungfu Reyes took over in Season 78.

The statistics displayed UST's dominance: they had 45 attack points to only 26 for UE. Indeed, Rondina and Laure (27 kills) had more spikes than the entire Lady Warriors squad combined.

UST also had more blocks (6-1) and aces (6-3). The Golden Tigresses did give away 22 points off their errors to 18 for UE. Rookie playmaker MaFe Galanza had 14 excellent sets, to 19 for UE's Lai Bendong.

Judith Abil led the Lady Warriors with 15 points, while libero Kath Arado was far from her best, as she tallied 12 excellent receptions and 11 digs.

It was UE's fourth straight loss of the season, dropping them to 1-6 at the end of the first round.
