MANILA - University of the East pulled off a massive upset in the UAAP Season 81 men's volleyball tournament, as they held on for a five-set victory over University of Santo Tomas on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Lloyd Josafat came up big in crunch time as the Red Warriors claimed a 27-25, 24-26, 25-23, 18-25, 17-15 triumph for their second win of the tournament.
The rookie middle blocker finished with a team-high 16 points, including two blocks of UST's Manuel Medina in the closing stretch to lead the Red Warriors to victory.
Al-jhon Abalon contributed 12 points, and Clifford Inoferio had 11 for the Red Warriors, who pounced on a whopping 50 unforced errors from the Tiger Spikers.
Medina scored 30 points, but was snuffed out in the end game. Jayvee Sumagaysay had 17 points, and Jerald Tajanlangit added 12 markers for UST, which scored 65 points off their kills and had an 11-8 advantage in blocks.
UE ended a five-game skid and improved to 2-5 to finish the first round, while UST dropped to 3-4 for fifth place.
Meanwhile, Adamson University snapped a three-game losing streak with a 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 triumph over University of the Philippines, also on Sunday.
Leo Miranda scored 18 points, and Pao Pablico and Mark Alvarez each contributed 17 as the Soaring Falcons improved to 4-3 to finish the first round of eliminations, keeping them in the Top 4.
UP, which drew 20 points from Mac Millete, ended the first round with a 0-7 record.
