MANILA – BanKo Perlas Spikers hopes to dominate the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) this year with the help of their new coach Apichat Kongsawat from Thailand, its team manager said Wednesday.
Apichat Kongsawat, the former coach of Thailand’s women’s volleyball team, arrived in the Philippines last Jan. 30 to lead the BanKo Perlas Spikers, team manager Charo Soriano told ABS-CBN News at the sidelines of a BPI event in Los Baños, Laguna.
“He’s quite knowledgeable because he is from Thailand so we share almost the same type of volleyball. They’re more advanced and more developed and they’ve been doing scientific training for volleyball in the last 25 years already,” Soriano said.
“He’s a very good background with that and that’s why we asked him to come here... Siguro having a coach from Thailand with all his experience and all his hardships and knowledge will be so helpful for the team, specially for the younger ones,” she added.
Kongsawat will bring to the country the Thai expertise in volleyball that brought their national team to the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the biggest and most prestigious volleyball tournament in the world, Soriano said.
“Thailand is actually one of the first Southeast Asian countries that’s already being represented in the FIVB and that’s a very big feat because it’s the next most prestigious league after the Olympics,” she said.
Speaking to ABS-CBN, Kongsawat said he planned to focus on “strategy, training and teamwork."
Outside hitters Nicole Tiamzon and Dzi Gervacio said training has become “more intense” since Kongsawat arrived.
“First time ko magkaroon ng foreigner na coach so parang nakikita mo rin yung difference talaga nung mga drills nila, how complex 'yung mga pinapagawa nila na dinadala nila dito sa Pilipinas,” Tiamzon said.
“Alam naman natin ang mga Thai coaches very intense magpa-ensayo and I think the girls are enjoying it, they're learning a whole lot. Talagang madami kaming matutunan from him,” Gervacio said.
Kongsawat also made sure everyone in the team has a “champion mindset," Soriano said.
“When he came here, that’s the first thing that he did, make sure everybody is on the same page and siguro, he also wants to build very good rapport with the team. He wants the champion mindset,” she said.
In December, BanKo Perlas scored the bronze medal in the PVL Season 2 Open Conference at Batangas City Coliseum.
