MANILA, Philippines – Veteran boxing commentator Larry Merchant said “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire Jr. should make his way soon to the featherweight ranks where the real money comes in.
Merchant said Donaire, who currently battles as a super bantamweight, will get more attention when he fights the best featherweights of his era.
"Nonito is in his prime," Merchant said in Examiner. "I think he's got to get into the featherweight mix as soon as it's reasonable, to see if he has the strength and ability to deal with the best featherweights.”
Donaire recently won the WBO super bantamweight crown via a split decision victory Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. last February.
Merchant said a potential match against future legend Jorge Arce of Mexico will be an interesting fight for the Filipino Flash.
"There's talk right now about him fighting the Mexican Arce, hey, that's a big fight. That's a good fight," he said.
"That would give him a chance to really breakout, maybe. And let's see what happens then. Let's see if he becomes big enough that the top guys in the featherweight division are willing to fight him."
